The South Orange County Community College District (SOCCCD) has announced plans to expand its Advanced Technology & Education Park (ATEP), a major initiative designed to strengthen workforce development and career-focused education across Orange County, California. The expansion highlights the district’s ongoing collaboration with industry partners to create career-aligned learning opportunities for students.
Located on a 61.4-acre campus, the ATEP project will expand its developed footprint to approximately 30 acres as part of the new phase of development. The initiative builds on recent additions to the campus, including a 50,000-square-foot facility dedicated to culinary arts and automotive technology programs, which provides students with hands-on training environments designed to mirror real-world workplaces.

The expansion will also bring new corporate partners to the site. Among the organizations establishing a presence at ATEP is Advantech, an industrial computing company that will open its warehouse and headquarters at the park. These partnerships aim to strengthen the connection between education and industry, allowing students to gain practical experience while preparing for in-demand careers.
SOCCCD leaders say the initiative is focused on creating workforce-ready graduates while supporting broader regional economic development. By integrating academic programs with industry needs, the district seeks to ensure students develop the skills employers require in today’s evolving job market.
Dr. Julianna M. Asperin Barnes, Chancellor of SOCCCD, emphasized that the district’s mission centers on student success from expanding access and equity to supporting completion, transfer opportunities, and career readiness. Through its colleges, Saddleback College and Irvine Valley College, the district provides academic programs, career education pathways, and lifelong learning opportunities designed to help students achieve their personal and professional goals.

The ATEP expansion also includes continued investment in modern facilities and emerging technologies to support workforce-focused programs. According to the district, these investments are intended to ensure educational programs remain aligned with industry demands while preparing students for future careers in advanced technology and skilled professions.
SOCCCD’s Board of Trustees highlighted the importance of strong governance and collaboration in advancing the initiative. The board works closely with district leadership to maintain accountability, responsible financial management, and policies that prioritize student success and community impact.
The district also emphasizes the importance of incorporating student perspectives into decision-making processes. By involving students in planning discussions and program development, SOCCCD aims to strengthen trust, improve educational outcomes, and ensure workforce initiatives such as ATEP effectively support the needs of both learners and the regional economy.
