In response to Amazon’s announcement that it will eliminate an additional 16,000 jobs worldwide as part of an effort to “streamline operations” and accelerate its shift toward AI-driven infrastructure, Jersey Hired, New Jersey’s leading hyper-local job board and talent platform, is calling for an urgent national dialogue on the role of artificial intelligence in workforce.
This latest reduction brings Amazon’s total job cuts to approximately 30,000 in just four months, highlighting a growing pattern in which human labor is increasingly replaced by automation and algorithmic systems. While the company continues to invest heavily in AI technologies and data center expansion, thousands of employees who contributed to Amazon’s rapid growth are being displaced.
Richard Eib, Group Managing Director of Local Talent Group the parent company of Jersey Hired issued the following statement addressing the layoffs and their broader implications for workers in New Jersey and beyond:

“We are in the midst of a profound transformation in how work is defined, and we are not adequately prepared for the consequences. While AI holds real promise for innovation, it is currently being deployed in ways that prioritize efficiency over people. Without an open and responsible discussion around the ethical use of AI, we risk creating long-term job displacement that could destabilize communities and erode the foundation of the middle class. Efficiency cannot come at the cost of livelihoods.”
Eib also pointed to the long-standing impact of Amazon’s expansion on local economies, particularly on small businesses and community retail centers across New Jersey.
“After years of undercutting local Main Street businesses and reshaping the retail landscape, Amazon is now shedding the very workforce that helped build its success. Replacing people with code after achieving market dominance is not just operational restructuringit represents a fundamental disconnect from the workers who made that growth possible.”

Jersey Hired continues to focus on strengthening New Jersey’s local labor market by connecting job seekers with employers who prioritize human skills, local knowledge, and long-term employment. However, the organization cautions that without thoughtful regulation, corporate accountability, and a renewed social contract around automation, the state’s economic resilience remains at risk.
To address these concerns, Jersey Hired is calling on policymakers, business leaders, and labor advocates to convene a national summit on “The Human Cost of Automation.” The goal: to ensure that technological progress enhances not undermines the livelihoods of workers and the communities they support.
